The Backstory

As a Graduate Research Assistant for Greenhouse Studios, I took on roles such as UX/UI designer and front-end developer. When I started working for Greenhouse Studios in 2020, we began an initiative to rebuild our website and refresh our brand.

The Problem

The old version of the Greenhouse Studios website was hard to navigate with nine tabs and extensive drop down menus. The copy was very lengthy and hard to understand, as the majority of the writing that existed on the Greenhouse Studios website was derived from grant writing, which was at an advanced academic reading level. Asides from those usability issues, users were often left wondering what exactly we do and why we were called Greenhouse Studios, when we in fact, did not cultivate plants. Greenhouse Studios’ founding members wanted their website to clearly reflect their values and the playful, collaborative spirit of the organization.

The People Page

Reading about our members used to involve a lot of back and forth navigating and lengthy reading. We also realized the biographies of our team members reinforced the academic and workplace hierarchies that Greenhouse Studios broke down as an organization. Our designs needed to be more user friendly and align with our values as an organization. Reading about our team members now only involves a flip of a card. We developed a new framework for structuring the biographies of our members that focuses on their unique background, passions, interests and research, rather than their level of education or position.

The Project Page

The old website did not have a designated project page where users could get an idea of the types of projects Greenhouse Studios produced. Learning about projects involved a lot of back and forth between a long drop down menu and lengthy pages of text.

The new website has a designated project page that showcases the diverse work of Greenhouse Studios. Interactive, flippable cards allow users to easily explore the projects at their own will. The cards give a brief, concise overview of the project and offer the opportunity to learn more. Projects with established branding have elements of their own visual identity incorporated in the project cards to provide additional context and meaning.

The Final Product

We released our MVP earlier this year and we are currently working on refining our code and adding additional wayfinding
